New Delhi: Sonam Wangchuk has announced that he will continue his fast until youth leaders are allowed to meet MPs in Parliament or they come to the hospital where he is admitted.
Gitanjali Angmo shared on social media a handwritten message from her husband that offered solidarity to the protesters who have been demanding the resignation of Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET-UG paper leak.
“I will continue my fast (day 23). Seeing the brutality with which peacefully protesting youth are being dealt with, I have decided to continue my fast until the youth leaders are allowed to meet the Parliamentarians at the Sansad Bhawan or I am allowed to meet them here at the hospital,” Wangchuk wrote in the signed note.
“Hopefully the government will fix accountability of the education minister before that. I am touched and moved by how the youth have held on to peace despite provocation and I appeal to the government and the police to resolve the issue by simply allowing the students to present their grievances before parliament today or tomorrow,” the Ladakh-based activist added. He also expressed hope that the protesters “will show the same patience and tolerance tomorrow as they did today.”
Despite Delhi Police clamping section 163 of BNSS in New Delhi district to ban gathering or assembly of more than five persons, thousands joined the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-spearheaded protest on Monday and tried to march towards Parliament.
They clashed with police who tried to stop them by baton-charging and using tear gas.
Delhi Police is likely to register FIRs based on complaints received from various locations during the CJP protest.
Two buses of Delhi Police were allegedly vandalised by protesters.
Police said 5 IPS officer were among several cops injured in the clashes.
Around protesters were detained and taken to Chhatrasal Stadium, according to lawyers assisting them.
According to a lawyer, authorities have not allowed legal representatives to meet the detainees and have restricted access to the stadium.
CJP members condemned tear gas shelling on protesters near Parliament, questioning what it described as a peaceful protest.
Opposition leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal and Mamata Banerjee also slammed the government for action against protesters.
