Sonia Gandhi Hasn’t Retired, Never Will, Clarifies Congress

Raipur: A day after her speech at the 85th plenary session of Congress here sparked speculation about her retirement from politics, the party dismissed any such possibility.

Party spokesperson Alka Lamba said Sonia has not retired and never will.

“Media should stop interpreting ma’am’s speech incorrectly. Ma’am said that she had never retired and never will,” Lamba said while speaking on the final day of the plenary session.

Sonia was seen smiling as Lamba spoke.

Sonia had said she was happy that her innings could conclude with the Bharat Jodo Yatra.

“Our victories in 2004 and 2009 under the able leadership of Dr Manmohan Singh gave me personal satisfaction, but what makes me happy is that my innings ended with the Bharat Jodo Yatra, a turning point for the Congress. It has proved that the people of India overwhelmingly want harmony, tolerance, and equality,” was what Sonia said a day earlier.

Sonia led the UPA, headed by the grand old party, to election victories in 2004 and 2009. She remained party president till 2017 and was president again from 2019 till Mallikarjun Kharge took over late last year.
