Mumbai: Swapnil Prakash Phaterpekar, son of Chembur MLA and leader of Uddhav Thackeray’s party Prakash Phaterpekar, has been booked for allegedly manhandling singer Sonu Nigam and his team at a music event in Mumbai’s Chembur on Monday night over a selfie.
In the video clip, which has gone viral on social media, one person can be seen falling from the stairs leading up to the stage.
The singer told ANI that Swapnil tried to ‘hold’ him as he was coming down from the stage and ‘pushed’ his associates when they tried to come to his rescue. “I fell on the steps after I was pushed. Rabbani (Khan) came to save me and was pushed from behind. He could have died. I filed a complaint so that people would think about forcefully taking selfies and causing scuffle,” he said.
His aide, who suffered minor injuries, received basic treatment at a hospital and was discharged.
“Sonu Nigam was getting down from the stage when some people rushed to take a selfie. During that time, bodyguards were trying to push those people away, but by mistake, one person from Sonu Nigam’s team was pushed by mistake. Nothing has happened to Sonu Nigam,” Prakash Phaterpekar was quoted as saying.
Swapnil has been booked under IPC sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt). Police, however, have denied any political angle to the incident.
