Cuttack: Singer Sourin Bhatt, who is facing harassment charges, deposed before the Mahila Police station in Odisha’s Cuttack city on Monday.
Breaking his silence on the controversy, the singers said that the allegations of harassment levelled against him are false. “The allegations are baseless. The truth will come to fore soon,” he told the media.
“The singer’s medical test will be conducted. He has denied the allegations and claimed there was only friendship between him and the complainant,” said a police officer.
Notably, Sourin had remained untraceable since the woman, a resident of Cuttack city who works in a private bank, filed the complaint at Mahila police station here on June 12, alleging that he harassed her both physically and mentally on the promise of marrying her and giving her a break in singing, after being in a relationship for several years. She also accused the vocalist of having taken Rs 10 lakh from her.
Acting on the complaint, Mahila police had registered a case under Sections 294, 323, 341, 376, 417, 493 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code.
A four-member team of Commissionerate Police had visited the house of Sourin in Kolkata on June 22 but had to return without questioning him since he was in New Delhi. His family members had then assured the team that the singer would contact them after returning to Kolkata.
He then moved Orissa High Court for anticipatory bail, citing that the allegations against him were unfounded and deliberate attempts to defame him, and was granted interim protection on August 1. The court also asked him to cooperate with the investigators and appear at the Mahila police station, where the case has been registered.
