Southwest Monsoon Active Again, Heavy Rain To Lash Odisha For 5 Days

Bhubaneswar: With Southwest Monsoon active again, Odisha is likely to witness fairly widespread light/moderate rain with isolated heavy to very heavy falls during the next 5 days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Tuesday.

“The Monsoon trough at mean sea level is now passing through Ganganagar, Delhi, Aligarh, Hamirpur, Prayagraj, Daltonganj, Balasore and thence southeastwards to Central Bay of Bengal. The cyclonic circulation over southwest Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood is lying over Westcentral Bay of Bengal adjoining north Andhra Pradesh coast.”

The MeT office has issued yellow warning for heavy rainfall at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada and Gajapati districts till 8.30 am on Wednesday. It has also forecast thunderstorm with lightning for one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj. Light to moderate rain or thundershower is also likely at many places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Gajapati and at a few places in remaining districts of the state during this period.

On July 5, heavy rain is likely to lash one or two places in Malkagiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj with light to moderate rain or thundershower at many places in Odisha.

The intensity of rain is likely to increase the following day (July 6) with heavy to very heavy rain at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal and Balangir and heavy rainfall at some places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Boudh and Nuapada. Light to moderate rain or thundershower is likely at most places in the remaining parts of the state, according to the midday bulletin.

On July 7, heavy rainfall may occur at one or two places in Nuapada, Balangir, Sonepur, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Balasore districts with thundershowers across the state.

The yellow warning for heavy rain continues on July 8 for Bargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur.

The IMD further said that Odisha received 171.7 mm rainfall between June 4 and July 4, which 31% less than the usual *247.4 mm) during this period. The highest rainfall of 331.8 mm has been recoded in Deogarh district this season, which 41% more than the usual 235.9 mm.
