Bhubaneswar: After a brief delay, Southwest Monsoon arrived in Odisha on Thursday. It has advanced into some parts of south Odisha, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed.
“Southwest Monsoon has further advanced into some more parts of north Arabian Sea, Gujarat state, entire Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada, some parts of south Madhya Pradesh, most parts of Vidarbha, entire Telangana, some parts of south Chhattisgarh, and south Odisha, most parts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh today, some more parts of Westcentral & northwest Bay of Bengal,” the MeT office said.
Under its influence, southern districts are likely to receive rainfall. Odisha has been witnessing an increase in rainfall activity with the flow of moisture and pre-monsoon clouds from the east strengthening towards the state.
“Conditions are favourable for further advance of monsoon into some more parts of north Arabian Sea, Gujarat State, Madhya Pradesh, remaining parts of Vidarbha, Andhra Pradesh and Westcentral & northwest Bay of Bengal, some more parts of Chhattisgarh and Odisha, some parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, remaining parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and some more parts of Bihar, some parts of east Uttar Pradesh during next 2-3 days,” it added.
The IMD had earlier predicted the onset of monsoon over Odisha by June 15 or 16.
The arrival of monsoon is certainly a positive sign for agriculture as the state has seen 70% deficient rainfall so far in June.
