Southwest Monsoon Hits Kerala, Likely To Reach Odisha By June 10

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department confirmed the onset of southwest monsoon in Kerala on Tuesday. The monsoon rain arrived three days in advance and expected to cover the whole country in next two months .

It is expected to touch Odisha by June 10, with pre-monsoon showers in the first week of next month.

On Monday, Skymet weather, another weather forecasting agency, had mentioned the arrival of monsoon in Kerala.

“There are Monsoon-like conditions over Kerala and we can say that the annual rainfall season has arrived,” Skymet CEO Jatin Singh had told PTI.

However, the IMD confirmed the onset today and has predicted a ‘normal’ rainfall this season.

One of the main parameter for declaring monsoon is  – if 60 per cent of 14 stations – Minicoy, Amini, Thiruvananthapuram, Punalur, Kollam, Allapuzha, Kottayam, Kochi, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Thalassery, Kannur, Kudulu and Mangalore, recieve 2.5 mm or more rainfall for two consecutive days after May 10.

In the next 48 hours, the monsoon rain is said to further advance into some parts of central Arabian sea, remaining parts of Kerala and some parts of coastal and south interior Karnataka.
