New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department has, On Thursday, predicted that India will witness normal rainfall during the southwest monsoon season from June 5 to September 30 in 2022.
The southwest monsoon is likely to advance into South Andaman Sea and adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal around May 15.
IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said “We have updated all-India ‘rainfall normal’ to 87 cm for southwest monsoon for 1970-2020 based on data over a long period. There will be a normal monsoon this year in India as across the country there will be 99 pc of rainfall.”
“As per the prediction, there’ll be a uniform distribution of rainfall. For the Northeast, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, J&K and parts of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh rainfall could be below normal,” ANI reported quoting Mohapatra.
Under its impact, fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall is very likely to occur over Andaman & Nicobar Islands during next five days. Similarly, isolated heavy rainfall is very likely to occur over the region from May 14 to 16.
Normally, the Southwest Monsoon arrives in Kerala on June 1. However, this year it is expected to arrive one week earlier. The IMD has not given any prediction on rain advancement to Odisha.
