Bhubaneswar: The southwest monsoon is likely to advance into parts of south Odisha by June 10 due to the south-westerly wind flow from the Arabian Sea, the Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA) in Bhubaneswar said on Thursday.
Under the impact of the south-westerly wind flow, the monsoon may advance into some parts of Maharashtra and Telangana and also into some south Odisha districts by June 9 or 10, SC Sahu, Director of CEC, said.
The Arabian branch of the monsoon current was getting strengthened but the Bay of Bengal branch could become strong from June 15 after which the monsoon current is expected to advance into Odisha and other eastern states, he added.
Warm humid weather with temperature of less than 42 degree Celsius in the interior districts of Odisha and moderate temperature of less than 40 degree Celsius in the coastal region will prevail till June 10, he said.
If the onset of monsoon is delayed, day temperature may reach 45 degree in the western Odisha districts and 40 degree in the southern districts between June 12 and 16.
Sporadic norwester (Kalabaisakhi) is likely to continue in different parts of the state during the period but its frequency could be more in the coastal belt, Sahu said.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that southwest monsoon is likely to arrive in Odisha in next two to three days, ahead of its usual date of June 12.
