Bhubaneswar: With opposition BJP and Congress creating a ruckus over procurement of paddy in the Assembly, Speaker Surya Narayan Patro adjourned the proceedings till 4 pm on Friday.

As soon as the question hour began, the members of Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) created an uproar alleging that the farmers were sustaining heavy loss as their produce was lying at the mandis with the procurement agencies not lifting the paddy.

Deputy Leader of Opposition Bishnu Charan Sethi demanded that the paddy must be immediately procured and the payment made to the farmers who have to bear the expense of trucks and tractors carrying their produce waiting there for days.

Congress legislator Tara Prasad Bahinipati said, “We will not let the House to function until all the bags are cleared from the mandis.”

As the Opposition continued to disrupt the proceedings, the Speaker adjourned till 11.30 pm amid din. With the uproar continuing, Patro adjourned the House till 4 pm.

Senior BJD MLA Debi Mishra said the question hour should not be stalled. “The government is ready for discussion on any issue raised by the Opposition,” he added.
