Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Assembly was adjourned till 4 pm on the first day of the monsoon session due to uproar by opposition parties over Nupur Sharma issue on Saturday.
The session began with a condolence motion, moved by chief minister Naveen Patnaik, mourning the death of former MLA from Balliguda Surendra Nath Kanhar. The motion was supported by deputy leader of the Opposition BJP Bishnu Charan Sethi, Congress legislative party leader Narasingha Mishra and CPI (M) leader Laxman Munda.
While Bikram Keshari Arukha took the chair as new Speaker of the House, the chief minister attended through video-conferencing.
After the Speaker took up the listed business for the day, the members participated in the discussion. While the question hour was going on, Narasingha Mishra and Bishnu Sethi were h engaged in an argument over Supreme Court direction to suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma.
There was a pandemonium in the House as members of both parties started shouting. As the day’s business could not be transacted due to the din, Speaker adjourned the House till 4 pm.
