Special Court Declares Former MP Jaya Prada As ‘Absconding’ In Election Code Violation Cases

New Delhi: A special court has declared former Member of Parliament and actress Jaya Prada as “absconding” after she did not appear for hearings in two cases against her.

These cases involve allegations of violating the election code of conduct during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, in which she was a candidate representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Despite receiving non-bailable warrants seven times, Jaya Prada failed to appear before the court, prompting the MP MLA special court to take strict action against her.

Presided by Shobhit Bansal, the MP MLA special court has instructed the Superintendent of Police to establish a special team led by a Deputy Superintendent of Police to ensure Jaya Prada’s appearance in court by March 6. This legal provision is activated when an accused individual fails to appear in court despite warrants, initiating a proclamation procedure to ensure their attendance.

Jaya Prada continues to hold a significant presence as one of the most beloved and influential actors in both the Hindi and Telugu film industries. Subsequently, she transitioned from the film industry to join the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 1994, marking her entry into politics.

She was elected to the Lok Sabha from Rampur in 2004 and 2009 on a Samajwadi Party ticket. The SP expelled her subsequently.
