Sambalpur: A Special POCSO court has sentenced a man to death for rape and murder of a minor girl in Odisha’s Sambalpur district.
As per the case, the convict, Prashant Baghra of a village under Jamankira police station in the district, committed the crime in March, 2022.
While the minor girl had gone to attend to nature’s call on the day, Prashant forcefully took her to an isolated place and raped her. He also beheaded the girl with an axe and took her head to a borewell in the village.
While Prashant was cleaning the head at the borewell, some villagers saw him. Shocked by the sight, they informed the police. A team from Jamankira police station rushed to the village and arrested him.
Later, the girl’s father lodged a complaint against Prashant at the police station. Following investigation into the case, the police filed chargesheet in the court.
The Special POCSO Court in Sambalpur heard the statements of 25 witnesses and examined the evidence submitted by the police. The court convicted Prashant in the case and announced its verdict of death sentence to him. The court also imposed a penalty of Rs one lakh on him.
