Colombo: Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has finally resigned.
Gotabaya Rajapaksa, having fled from his home country on Wednesday, flew from the Maldives to Singapore today from where he e-mailed his resignation letter to the Parliamentary speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, reported AFP.
“The Speaker of Sri Lanka’s Parliament has received President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s resignation letter,” the Speaker’s office confirmed.
Gotabaya had promised to step down by Wednesday, but the resignation was not forthcoming.
Meanwhile, Sri Lankans in Singapore registered their protest against Gotobaya.
Around 30 of them turned up at Changi airport, saying, “We are here to see a criminal and a fugitive who devastated our economy.”
A Saudi Airlines flight ferried Gotobaya to Singapore this evening, with the Foreign Ministry saying that his presence in the country was on a ‘private visit’.
