Odisha STA Plans Strict Enforcement Drive As Helmetless Riding Claims 1696 Lives In 2024

Bhubaneswar: A total of 3,017 persons were killed in 5,490 road accidents in 2024 across Odisha and 1,696 of these fatalities involved individuals flouting the helmet regulation, the State Transport Authority (STA) informed on Wednesday.

“Our analysis of last year’s data revealed a grim picture. Altogether, 3,017 men, comprising both bikers and pillion riders, lost their lives in 5,490 road accidents across the state in 2024. Disturbingly, 1,696 of these fatalities involved people who were not wearing helmets at the time of accident,” read a statement issued by STA.

It further noted that 5,160 helmetless bikers and pillion riders have lost their lives in the last 3 years.

Expressing concern over the deadly risks of ignoring road safety, the STA also announced a strict enforcement drive targeting those who flout helmet laws. The initiative will include intensified patrols and spot checks, alongside educational efforts to promote the life-saving importance of helmets. “We aim to reduce accidents and save lives by fostering responsible riding and ensuring safer roads,” an STA official stated.

It further informed that 789,015 people were fined last year for non-compliance.
