Puri: The Garuda Stambha at Shree Jagannath Temple in Odisha’s Puri is likely to be secured by a steel frame along with a silver coating to avoid the touch of devotees.
According to sources, Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has planned to install a stainless steel frame around the pillar and cover it with silver plating. The project will be executed at an estimated cost of Rs 130 lakh, informed SJTA Administrator (Development) Ajay Jena.
S.N. Singh, Director of Bhiringhee Commercial Private Limited in Durgapur of West Bengal has expressed interest in doing the work, said sources.
SJTA report said that the Garuda Stambha is weakening day by day due to the touch of devotees. The sustainability of the pillar is at risk as the pillar is made of sandalwood and direct touch should be avoided.
Jena said preliminary discussions on this proposal are underway. Opinions on this have been sought from investors and the proposal will be implemented accordingly.
Notably, it has been believed since ancient times that if one touches the Garuda Stambha, the person’s body will be healed and sins will be forgiven. The devotees visiting to Puri Srimandir first touch the pillar and then go for Lord Jagannath darshan.
