Stop Now If You Take Yourself Too Seriously

Do tell me if you agree.

Taking oneself too seriously is one of the most common predicaments in the corridors of offices and beyond, making senior managers and top-level executives out of touch with reality.

It’s a trait often seen in them but not confined to them.

Many of us fall into this trap, believing the world’s weight rests on our shoulders and obsessing over how others perceive us.

This is true in both life and work.

If you are there, you know how it feels.

It has other repercussions, like taking others too seriously. You constantly worry about what they think of you. And it drives you crazy.

The Revelation: Loosening Up

My world changed once I loosened up.

Suddenly, the heavy cloak of self-importance I had draped over my shoulders felt unnecessary. I stopped fussing over my image and what others thought of me.

This wasn’t about losing self-respect or not caring about who I am, but about gaining comfort in my skin.

The first thing to grasp is this: The world doesn’t revolve around us. We might feel special, but to others, we’re just another person in their world. The next thing to come to terms with is that our self-image is not our identity; it’s merely a perception others hold. Detaching our self-worth from the applause of our audience is liberating.

It’s expected to be concerned: “If I don’t take myself seriously, will others?”

The truth is, taking yourself less seriously doesn’t equate to a lack of self-respect. It’s about being at ease with yourself, and this ease fosters growth and respect.

The Path To Get There

So, how do you take yourself less seriously? Here are three steps you can use:

Loosen Up: Embrace life earnestly, but treat yourself with a light touch. Your life is serious, but you don’t have to be.

Learn to Laugh at Yourself: It’s a powerful stress reliever. You become relatable and more approachable when you laugh at your follies and foibles.

Embrace Vulnerability: It’s okay to be imperfect. Showing your human side isn’t a weakness; it’s an endearing strength.

This shift in mindset can make you feel like you’re walking on air. The burden of constant self-importance and worrying about others’ opinions can weigh you down more than you feel. By reducing self-importance, you free yourself to tackle life’s challenges with a clearer, unburdened mind.

A Message To Carry Forward

If you are yet to overcome this unwelcome trait, learn to make peace with this:

You Are Not The Center Of The Universe

Why carry a burden that others don’t even associate with you? It’s time to cut the strings of undue self-importance and witness the difference it makes.

Remember that your value doesn’t diminish when you stop taking yourself too seriously. On the contrary, it often enhances your appeal and opens avenues for personal growth.

Loosen up, laugh at yourself, embrace your vulnerabilities, and watch how the world changes around you. Life’s too short to be burdened by our exaggerated self-importance.

Walk light, feel right.
