Strong Earthquake Jolts Taiwan, Second One This Week [Watch]

Taiwan earthquake

New Delhi: A strong earthquake of 7.0 magnitude shook Taiwan on Saturday night, reported Reuters.

The earthquake struck 32 km off Taiwan’s northeastern coastal city of Yilan at a depth of 73 km, the island nation’s weather administration said.

Residents shared videos showing the tremors that shook buildings in the capital city of Taipei.

The National Fire Agency said authorities were in the process of assessing damage.

This was the second major earthquake to hit the island this week, following a 6.0 magnitude quake on Wednesday.

Taiwan is prone to earthquakes as it lies near the junction of two tectonic plates.

In the deadliest earthquake in Taiwan, a tremor of 7.3 magnitude killed more than 2,000 people in 1999.

In 2016, more than 100 people died in an earthquake in southern Taiwan.
