Baripada: A student was killed after being run over by a speeding truck on National Highway-18 near Baisinga Chhak in Mayurbhanj district on Friday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Mangala Murmu, a +2 student of Betanati College. He was a resident of Padmanavpur village.
The victim was reportedly on his way to attend tuition classes on a bicycle when the mishap took place.
Irked over the incident, an angry mob staged a road blockade near the accident spot demanding adequate compensation for the bereaved family.
“The accident took place due to over-speeding by the truck driver. We demand action against him and compensation for the family of the college student,” a local resident said.
The road blockade was withdrawn after Betanati additional tehsildar, SDPO and other officials reached the spot and assured the agitators that their demand will be considered.
Vehicular traffic between the busy road connecting Baripada and Balasore was disrupted for a couple of hours due to the blockade.
Police have detained the driver of the truck and seized the vehicle.
