Imphal: At least 5 school students are feared dead and many others injured in a road accident in Manipur on Wednesday.
Two buses were carrying Thambalnu Higher Secondary School (Yaripok) students on their annual study tour to Khoupum in Noney district. According to police, the driver of the bus in which girl students were travelling in lost control, causing it to overturn at Nungsai village, 50 km south-west of Imphal.
Five students died on the spot while the injured ones were taken to nearby hospitals and healthcare centres, police said.
“Deeply saddened to hear about the accident of a bus carrying school children at the Old Cachar Road today. SDRF, Medical team and MLAs have rushed to the site to coordinate the rescue operation. Praying for the safety of everyone in the bus,” tweeted Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh.
The CM later visited the hospitals where the injured students are being treated.
According to a district official, the number of casualties may rise.
