Sub-Postmaster Suspended Over Misappropriation Of Rs 50 Cr Govt Fund In Odisha



Nabarangpur: A sub-postmaster has been suspended for alleged involvement in misappropriation of Rs 50 crore government funds meant for Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) in Odisha’s Koraput and Nabarangpur districts.

The accused has been identified as Gouranga Sarkar, who was the sub-postmaster of Jharigaon Sub-P


ost Office in Nabarangpur district when the alleged fraud took place. He was now posted at Baipariguda in Koraput district.

Following allegations of largescale financial irregularities, the postal superintendent has placed Sarkar under suspension.

It has been alleged that DBT funds meant for beneficiaries under various government schemes were allegedly siphoned off through fraudulent transactions at Jharigaon, Kodinga and Dabugaon post offices.

Following the allegations from different quarters, including opposition political parties, an investigation was launched by the postal department into the suspected embezzlement and misuse of funds.

Investigation is also underway against two other postmasters in connection with the fraud case, a senior official said.

Financial records, beneficiary accounts and transaction details are being thoroughly examined to ascertain the extent of the alleged scam and identify those involved, officials said.
