Bhubaneswar: As forecast by Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) earlier, Odisha’s Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts are heading towards high flood with three major rivers breaching danger mark at 6 pm on Sunday.
According to official reports, Subarnarekha river crossed the danger mark at Rajghat. The water level of the river stood at 11.01 metre against the danger mark of 10.36 metre. Its water level at Jamsholaghat had gone up to 53.34 metre against the danger mark of 49.15 metre in the day and the flow was steadily increasing.
Jalaka river was also flowing above the danger mark at Mathani. While the danger mark at the place is 5.5 metre, its water level was measured at 6.7 metre. Four blocks are likely to face heavy flooding due to the overflowing Jalaka.
Similarly, Budhabalanga was flowing above the danger mark near National Highway 5. Its water level went up to 7.36 metre against the danger mark of 7.21 metre, the sources said.
Earlier, SRC PK Jena said, “Flood is certain in Balasore and Mayurbhanj. The intensity of the flood will be a bit higher. Excess flood water is currently being released through 16 gates of Galudih barrage in Jharkhand, which means around five lakh cusec water will flow through these districts and trigger high floods in the downstream.”
Due to overflowing Subrnarekha, Baliapal, Bhograi, Jaleswar and Basta blocks will face heavy flood, the SRC added.
The administration of both districts has launched massive operation to evacuate the people from the areas likely to face flood. Earlier, the state government delegated the powers of the SRC to Balasore district magistrate to manage the emergency situation.
