New Delhi: Author and philanthropist Sudha Murty has been nominated to Rajya Sabha by President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Friday.
“I am delighted that the President of India has nominated @SmtSudhaMurtyJi to the Rajya Sabha. Sudha Ji’s contributions to diverse fields including social work, philanthropy and education have been immense and inspiring. Her presence in the Rajya Sabha is a powerful testament to our ‘Nari Shakti’, exemplifying the strength and potential of women in shaping our nation’s destiny. Wishing her a fruitful Parliamentary tenure,” PM Modi wrote on X.
Murty 73, is an engineer by training. She is also an Indian educator, author, and philanthropist, and has formerly chaired the Infosys Foundation. She is also involved in public healthcare initiatives supported by the Gates Foundation. Murty has founded the Murty Classical Library of India at the Harvard University.
She received the Padma Shri in 2006 and was conferred with Padma Bhushan in 2023.
A a prolific writer, Sudha Murthy is also known for her novel “Dollar Bahu,” originally written in Kannada and subsequently translated into English. The novel was adapted into a dramatic series by Zee TV in 2001. Additionally, her story “Runa” was adapted into a Marathi film.
