Malkangiri: Daring act taken as an urgent decision by a policeman saved a teacher from committing suicide by drowning in a river in the district.

According to sources, Mukunda Madhi, working as a teacher in Niliguda Colony School in Kudumulguma under Chitrakonda block, was depressed due to family disturbances for the last few days. On Tuesday afternoon, Madhi had another dispute with his family members and decided to commit suicide.

The teacher went to Orkel-Chitapari bridge and jumped into Balimela river from 10 feet height to end his life. The locals saw him committing the act and informed Orkel police station.

Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Ajit Sarangi of the police station along with a team rushed to the spot. On reaching there, Sarangi saw Madhi drowning in the river. Without wasting time or calling for help from others, the 40-year-old ASI jumped from the bridge.

He swam across the swirling water of the river and rescued the drowning teacher. The brave policeman brought Madhi to he banks on his own. Later, Madhi was admitted to Balimela primary health centre and his family informed about the incident. Madhi’s condition stabilised after treatment and was discharged from the hospital.

ASI Sarangi has won accolades for his brave action from the local people and his higher police officials.
