Berhampur: A woman died while her husband is battling for life after the couple allegedly attempted suicide at their house in Patapur area of Berhampur in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Monday.
Sources said the incident took place when the teacher couple allegedly consumed poison at their house in Dengadi under the jurisdiction of Patpur police station. The deceased was identified as Shailendri Mohanty, while her husband Jayasen Mohanty is undergoing treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.
While Nilendri was a teacher at Kachkhandi Primary School in Berhampur, Jayasen works in a school outside Ganjam district.
Though the exact reason behind the extreme step taken by the couple is yet to be ascertained, it is suspected that they might have done this after losing money in online betting games.
An investigation has been launched into the incident and a clear picture is likely to emerge soon, police said.
