SUM Hospital takes up cochlear implant on 4-year-old with govt help

Bhubaneswar: The Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, a constituent of the SOA University, successfully undertook the highly expensive cochlear implant surgery on a four-year-old girl with assistance from the government. It was for the second time that such a surgery was conducted at the hospital.
Smrutirekha, the child from Athagarh in Cuttack district, was unable to hear since birth. After she was brought to the hospital by her parents, ENT specialists advised cochlear implant as a solution. The surgery was taken up under the Assistance to Disabled Persons for Purchase/Fitting of Aids and Appliances (ADIP) scheme of the government.
SUM Hospital has been empanelled with the central government for treatment of deaf-mutism.
The scheme aims at helping the disabled persons by bringing suitable, durable, scientifically-manufactured, modern, standard aids and appliances within their reach.
It was a huge relief to the poor parents of the girl as the surgery was done free of cost.
The team headed by Prof. Santosh Kumar Swain successfully undertook the surgery on the girl. The other members of the team were Dr. Soumya Das, Dr. Alok Das, Dr. Bulu Nahak and Lopamudra Tripathy.
