New Delhi: In major jolt to Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, Delhi police, on Monday, charged the leader with abetting the suicide of his wife, Sunanda Pushkar.
Claiming that they had enough evidence against Tharoor, police concluded that Sunanda’s death was a suicide and not murder and an FIR registered by them in January 2015 had mentioned ‘unknown persons’ behind it.
In the 3000-page chargesheet, police alleged that Tharoor had subjected his wife to cruelty him under sections 498 A (maximum punishment of three years in prison) and 306 (maximum punishment of 10 years in prison) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Tharoor, however, denied the charge and dismissed it as ‘preposterous.’
“I have taken note of the filing of this preposterous charge sheet & intend to contest it vigorously. No one who knew Sunanda believes she would ever have committed suicide, let alone abetment on my part,” Tharoor tweeted.
The Congress too backed the MP and alleged that it was a conspiracy to defame him.
“We won’t cow down or bow down. This is a conspiracy to defame Shashi Tharoor and malign him and the Modi government is using Delhi police for the purpose,” said Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala.
Sunanda Pushkar was found dead in a Delhi hotel in January 2014, shortly after a bitter spat with Tharoor on Twitter over his alleged affair with Pakistan-based journalist Mehr Tarar.
