Crime Against Women

Sundargarh SP Saumya Mishra Booked For ‘Causing Miscarriage’

Rourkela: Police on Saturday lodged a case of causing miscarriage without woman’s consent against Sundargarh superintendent of police Saumya Mishra following a court direction.

“We have registered case against Sundargarh SP Saumya Mishra in tune with the directions of Sundargarh sub-divisional judicial magistrate (SDJM),” said inspector-in-charge, Hemgiri police station, Sradhanjali Subudhi.

The court, acting on a petition filed by Priya Dey, ordered Hemgiri police to book Mishra under sections 166 (public servant disobeying law with intent to cause injury to any person), 167 (public servant framing an incorrect document with intent to cause injury), 294 (utters any obscene words in public), 313 (causing miscarriage without woman’s consent), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint), 342 (wrongful confinement), 427 (mischief and thereby causing loss or damage), 457 (house-trespass by night to commit offence), 503 (threatens another with injury to his person, reputation or property) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation).

On July 4, Mishra allegedly assaulted Dey, who has stated that she consequently suffered a miscarriage, while the latter was sleeping with her four-year-old daughter in her house. The next day police arrested her husband, Uttam Dey, in connecting with an incident of torching of vehicles, including an SUV seized by police, and damaging the police beat house at Kanika in Sundargarh district. Police have apprehended at least 13 others in this case.

Infuriated over the death of Lipun Naik, 19, a resident of Kanika under Hemgiri police station, on July 3 following a road accident, a group of local people on July 4 blocked the road in front of Kanika police beat house and subsequently pelted stones at the security establishment. They allegedly damaged two four-wheelers parked inside the beat house, locked two constables inside their office and even injured them.

According to the complainant, who lives in Kanika village and moved court on August 5, Mishra along with a number of armed police personnel forcefully entered her house and threatened her of dire consequences unless she discloses the whereabouts of her husband.  The SP is accused of pushing Dey and hit her abdomen, which led to miscarriage.

Mishra could not be contacted for her reaction.
