Sunday Poem: The Arid Summer

By
Namita Mohanty

Waited for you
quite long though
perturbed I was
with your thoughts
I watched the waves
in the sea
breaking against the beach
uninterruptedly.

Slowly and gently
sea breeze was blowing
birds chirping
expressing their
appreciation for
the unbound sea
rumbling thunder
indicating the arrival of
an untimely rain
in the tired evening
of mid-summer.

Your delayed arrival
made me impatient
I was a bit afraid
of losing all that
I carried
in my memory
to tell you the
love and faith
we shared every
day of every season
to strengthen our bond
of togetherness in
this beautiful earth.

Drops of tears you
shedded for being
away from me
for so long
you remained busy
became disillusioned
with the fiasco of life.

Years after separation
you came to meet me
to rejuvenate the core
of our love
to renew the
bond of mutual trust
in a distrustful world.

Tightly we held hands
promised to be together
to teach and play with
the children of the fishermen
help the people
in the community
making their life
better and promising.

In a small world of ours
full of gravels and sands
smell of sea water and
unpretentious love
of those children
surrounding our life
I surrendered
watched the rising sun
in the eastern sky
greeting the world
with a warm smile.
