New York: Amid reports of deteriorating health of astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, it has been learnt that the two NASA astronauts have been feasting on pizza, roast chicken, and shrimp cocktails in space.
However, The New York Post has reported that the two NASA astronauts, who have been stranded on the International Space Station (ISS) for five months now, have very little fresh food including vegetables and fruits left in their stock.
Ever since photos of Williams from the ISS showed her weak, with sunken cheeks, the space agency has been closely monitoring the health of the two stranded astronauts.
According to The New York Post, a specialist associated with the mission said that the two astronauts are consuming enough calories as they have a variety of food, including breakfast cereal, powdered milk, pizza, shrimp cocktails, roast chicken, and tuna in their diet.
However, fresh fruit and vegetables are limited as it takes three months for the ISS to get the new supply.
“There’s fresh fruit at first but as the three months continues that goes away — and their fruits and vegetables are packaged or freeze-dried,” he said.
There is 1.7 kg of food per astronaut per day, which is personalised to meet each astronaut’s daily requirements on the ISS, according to NASA.
