Mumbai: Actor Sunny Deol’s upcoming historical drama Batwara 1947 has reportedly received clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) without any cuts, according to sources.
With the certification in place, the film is set to hit theatres as scheduled on August 14, 2026.
Inspired by acclaimed playwright Asghar Wajahat’s play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai, the film unfolds against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition. It explores the aftermath of the violence that followed the division and the deep emotional upheaval experienced across the Indian subcontinent.
The story centres on a Mohajir family that migrates to Lahore and moves into an abandoned Hindu home. The narrative revolves around an elderly Hindu woman who refuses to leave the house, leading to tensions and conflicts between her and the family that moves in.
At its heart, the film celebrates the bond that develops between the two families and delivers a message of hope and positivity. It follows a man who chooses humanity and courage amid one of the most turbulent periods in the country’s history.
Sunny Deol plays the central protagonist, a man guided by courage and humanity amid widespread violence and fear. Veteran actress Shabana Azmi, meanwhile, portrays an elderly woman stranded in Pakistan who refuses to leave her ancestral home.
The makers recently shared a new poster for Batwara 1947, featuring an idol of Lord Krishna and a lit diya in the foreground, while the backdrop captures the turmoil surrounding the 1947 Partition of India.
Sharing the poster, the makers wrote, “When the world chose sides, HE chose dharma. Watch #Batwara1947 in cinemas this Partition Day, 14th August.”
Helmed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan Productions and Aparna Purohit, the film features Sunny Deol, Shabana Azmi, Preity Zinta, Karan Deol, Ali Fazal, Abhimanyu Singh, Khhushi Hajare and Kanikka Kapur.
