Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government on Wednesday confirmed the death of seven persons due to sunstroke.

Informing the media here, Deputy Special Relief Commissioner Prabhat Kumar Mohapatra said seven out of 45 reports of suspected sunstroke deaths have been confirmed.

“The district collectors have been asked to confirm the nature of death of the remaining 37 cases and submit report to the SRC,” Mohapatra added.

In a release on Wednesday, the India Meteorological Centre (IMD) said the south-west monsoon is likely to further advance over some more parts of Odisha between June 23 and 25.

“A cyclonic circulation lies over Bihar and adjoining east Uttar Pradesh extending up to 0.9 km above the sea level while another cyclonic circulation formed over the west-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal Andhra Pradesh now lies over central Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood. Besides, an east-west trough line runs from the cyclonic circulation over Bihar to east Bangladesh which is a favourable condition for the advance of the south-west monsoon towards the Odisha coast,” the release added.

Meanwhile, temperature went up to 40 degree Celsius and above at eight places with Angul recording the highest 41.9 degree Celsius.

The seven other places where mercury hovered around 40 degrees and above are Chandbali (40.2), Baripada (40.4), Sambalpur (40.1), Balangir (40), Tititalgarh (41), Sonepur (40) and Dhenkanal (40.2)

The IMD has predicted that the heatwave condition would prevail in the state till next five days up to June 26 despite rain or thundershower at one or two places during the period.
