Super Cyclone Amphan Weakens Into Deep Depression; Know Its Position

Bhubaneswar: The super cyclonic storm Amphan moved north-northeastwards with a speed of 27 kmph during the past 6 hours, further weakened into a cyclonic storm and lay centered at 5.30 am on Thursday, over Bangladesh, about 270 km north-northeast of Kolkata, 150 km south of Dhubri and 110 km south-southeast of Rangpur (Bangladesh).

According to Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, it is very likely to continue to move north-north-eastwards and weaken further into a deep depression during the next 3 hours and into a depression during the subsequent 6 hours.

Amphan, which made landfall on May 20 afternoon and evening, close to Sunderbans with a wind speed of 155-165 kmph, claimed 10 to 12 lives in West Bengal.

Streets in Kolkata were waterlogged, trees uprooted and houses damaged due to strong winds and heavy rain as the eye of the storm passed through the city last evening.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel could be seen clearing electricity wires and uprooted trees off the road between Digha in East Midnapore district and Odisha border last night.
