New Delhi: India versus Pakistan cricket clashes always produce high-voltage action, but are few and far between, thanks to the political differences between the two nations.
But even in other sports, there is no dearth of excitement and adrenaline when India and Pakistan face off at any venue.
September 30 was one such day when Indian and Pakistani teams confronted each other in three different sports across Asia. And it turned out to be Super Saturday for India as they came up trumps in all three contests.
It all started with the men’s team squash final at the Asian Games in Hangzhou. After Mahesh Mangaonkar lost the opening rubber, Saurav Ghosal levelled scores and Abhay Singh clinched a nail-biting decider to seal a historic gold medal.
Shift to Nepal, the Dasharath Rangasala Stadium in Kathmandu, where India’s footballers dominated Pakistan in the final of the SAFF U-19 Championship to win 3-0.
Then came the icing on the cake – an incredible 10-2 hammering in men’s hockey back at the Hangzhou Asian Games this evening. Skipper Harmanpreet Singh alone scored four goals as Indians rained goals against their traditional rivals.
It was by far the largest victory margin by either team in 180 clashes in the India-Pakistani hockey rivalry spanning over seven decades.
Netizens in India had a field day as they celebrated a truly memorable day for Indian sports.
Some of the memes pointed out Babar Azam’s current state of mind, referring to the upcoming India-Pakistan ODI World Cup clash in two weeks’ time.
