New Delhi: Three High Court chief justices were appointed as judges of the Supreme Court on Monday.
The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the names of Justices Sunita Agarwal, Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Aparesh Kumar Singh on September 28. President Droupadi Murmu made their appointments formal on Monday.
“The appointments were made in exercise of the powers conferred on the President by the Constitution of India,” Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said in a post on X.
Justice Sunita Agarwal is Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court and Justice Upadhyaya is Chief Justice of Delhi High Court. Allahabad High Court is parent high court of both.
Justice Singh is the Chief Justice of Telangana High Court and has Jharkhand High Court as his parent High Court.
With Justice Agarwal’s induction, the country’s top court now has three female judges, the others being Justice BV Nagarathna and Justice V Mohana.
Justice Nagarathna is in line to be the first Chief Justice of India — 54th overall — in September 2027.
Once the three new judges formally take oath, the effective strength of the apex court will go up to 37. The sanctioned strength is 38 judges, including the CJI.
