New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday gave strong indications that it will form a committee to investigate the encounters of Kanpur gangster Vikas Dubey and five of his aides.
Chief Justice of India SA Bobde informed that the bench headed by him will take a final call on the matter on July 20.
However, the top court allowed the Uttar Pradesh government, which was represented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, to elaborate its stand on the demand for a court-monitored probe that was stated in the petitions by advocates Ghanshyam Upadhyaya and Anoop Awasthi.
“I am representing the state of Uttar Pradesh. Kindly allow the state to place its view before the court proceeds to form a committee. By the way, we have already formed a committee headed by a retired HC judge,” Solicitor General Mehta said.
“This (interfering with an encounter) is something which the court will do very reluctantly. What we are planning is we will do something very similar to Hyderabad gangrape and murder case like forming a committee,” CJI Bobde replied.
It may be recalled that there was a huge uproar after cops killed all four accused in the Hyderabad veterinary doctor’s gang rape and murder case. The Supreme Court had then constituted a three-member probe panel with former SC judge VS Sirpukar at its helm.
