New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) suffered a setback on Monday as its plea challenging bail to Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren was dismissed by the Supreme Court.
Soren, who was arrested by ED on January 31 in a money-laundering case linked to a land scam, was granted bail by Jharkhand High Court on June 28.
Calling high court’s order “illegal”, ED had approached the Supreme Court.
However, the top court said that the high court’s order was “well-reasoned” and it had not disregarded any statements.
“It has given valid reasons for why statements are contradictory,” the Supreme Court said.
It went further to observe that ED might be in “difficulty” if it proceeds with the hearing.
“We don’t want to observe more; if we observe more, you (the ED) might be in difficulty,” the court said.
Following his release from Ranchi’s Birsa Munda jail, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha chief was reinstated as CM after winning the trust vote once Champai Soren stepped down from the post.
