Surat Court To Hear Rahul Gandhi’s Plea Against ‘Modi Surname’ Conviction & Sentence Tomorrow

New Delhi: The Surat sessions court will hear Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s plea against the Magistrate order, sentencing him to two years in prison in a defamation case, on Monday, sources told The Indian Express on Sunday.

On March 23, Chief Judicial Magistrate H H Verma sentenced Rahul to two years in jail on charges of defamation for a 2019 speech in which he referred to thieves as having the surname Modi while granting him immediate bail and allowing 30 days to appeal.

A day later, the 52-year-old scion of the Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty was disqualified from the House. He has also been asked to vacate his official bungalow in Lutyens’ Delhi by April 22.

Rahul would not be able to contest elections for eight years unless a higher court stays his conviction and sentence.
