Gandhinagar/Bhubaneswar: The minor girl, who was allegedly raped-murdered in Surat, might be a native of Odisha, Gujarat Home Minister Pradeep Singh Jadeja was quoted as saying by mediapersons on Monday.
“Police are yet to get the exact information about the 11-year-old rape victim’s family. We got posters of the deceased printed and pasted them at different places in the city. Police now suspect that she might be from Odisha,” the minister said.
He further said that the State Police is trying to match the photo of the deceased with that of 8,000 minor girls, who had been missing.
Talking about the investigation, he said the Surat police have started verifying the footage of CCTV cameras installed at different locations in Pandesara Industrial Area, where the body was found.
“This apart, Surat Police has also apprised Odisha DGP of the matter,” he informed.
As per the report by a local channel, Surat Police Commissioner has already contacted Odisha DGP Rajendra Sharma in connection with the case, and sent him details, which have now been forwarded to all district SPs to determine the identity of the girl.
Even as the nation was grappling with the shock over the rapes in Kathua and Unnao, a case in Surat emerged in which a minor was allegedly help captive and raped, before being murdered.
The body was spotted lying neat a cricket ground on April 6 and the autopsy report revealed 86 injury marks on her body, including private parts indicating that she was tortured and raped.
As stated by Ganesh Govekar, a doctor at the City Civil Hospital where the autopsy was conducted, “Going by the nature of injuries, they seem to have been caused over a period ranging from one week to a day prior to the recovery of the body, suggesting that the girl, who is between nine and 11 years of age, might have been held captive, tortured and possibly raped.”
