Surat/Bhubaneswar: Police seem to have solved the mystery surrounding the identity of the 11-year-old girl, who was brutally raped and killed at Pandesara in Surat, two weeks ago.
According to reports in national media, a couple from Andhra Pradesh has claimed to be the parents of the victim.
Gujarat Home Minister Pradeep Singh Jadeja had earlier said that the girl could be a native of Odisha. Surat Police Commissioner Satish Sharma had also contacted Odisha DGP Rajendra Sharma in connection with the case, and sent him details to determine her identity.
According to reports, the couple from Andhra Pradesh had filed a missing complaint after the girl went missing in October last year and even provided the Aadhaar card of their daughter to Surat police. Police, however, said they will conduct a DNA test to ascertain the couple’s claim.
“We had contacted all states with the photograph of the victim. A couple from Andhra Pradesh confirmed that the girl was their daughter. We believe that their claims are true but we will collect samples from parents and the body of the victim for DNA tests before coming to a final conclusion on their claim,” Sharma told the media.
Mutilated body of the girl was spotted lying near a cricket ground on April 6 and the autopsy report revealed 86 injury marks on her body, including private parts indicating that she was tortured and raped.
However, police haven’t yet identified the perpetrators of the crime.
