Bhubaneswar: A tumour weighing 10.5 kg was successfully removed from a woman’s abdomen, giving a pain-free and new lease of life.
The operation on the 50-year-old cancer patient was conducted by a team of surgeons at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital .
Associate Professor Dr Sangram Keshari Panda of Department of Surgical Oncology and his team performed the rare surgery on the patient from Kalahandi district.
Dr Panda said the woman was suffering from the tumour for the last two years because of which her abdomen was swollen rendering her incapable to walk properly.
“After she approached SUM Hospital, we conducted various tests and found her to be suffering from cancer. A large tumour in the abdomen was compressing other organs, a condition called Leiomyosarcoma,” said Dr Panda.
“As the tumour was compressing other organs in the abdomen it was very difficult to remove it. However, the critical surgery was carried out carefully and successfully by the team,” said Dr. Panda.
The patient, who treated under Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana, has been discharged from the hospital.
Other team members are Prof. Shaswat Patnaik, Head of Department of Anaesthesia and Dr C Prathamesh and Dr K Vikas from the Department of Surgical Oncology.
