Harare: Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s record-smashing 80-ball 175, studded with 15 fours and 15 sixes, virtually handed India their sixth ICC U-19 World Cup title at the Harare Sports Club on Friday.

England’s boys, chasing the impossible, went all guns blazing and put up a spirited fight. Opener Ben Dawkins (66 off 56 balls) and Ben Mayes (45 off 28) put some pressure on the Indian bowlers. But it was No. 5 Caleb Falconer’s 115 off 67 balls (9×4, 7×6) that gave England some hope of pulling off a miracle.

But, in the end, the sheer weight of India’s gigantic total – 411/9 in 50 overs — proved too tall a mountain to climb.

Suryavanshi was adjudged Player of the Final as well as Player of the Tournament.

India thus extended their dominant grip on the coveted title with a sixth triumph. Only Australia come anywhere near, having won the trophy four times.

Ayush Mhatre, who followed up his 62 in the semifinal against Afghanistan with another half-century (53) in the title clash, thus became the sixth Indian to lead the country to the U-19 World Cup summit.

India’s previous U-19 World Cup-winning captains were – Mohammed Kaif (2000), Virat Kohli (2008), Unmukt Chand (2012), Prithvi Shaw (2018) and Yash Dhull (2022).
