Susama Panigrahi, Odisha’s First Woman Scientist In ISRO Passes Away

Bhubaneswar: Dr. Susama Panigrahi, the first Odia woman scientist to have worked in the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), passed away at Ahmedabad on Sunday. She was 67.

She was suffering from cancer, family sources said.

Dr. Panigrahi worked in the field of remote sensing having direct relevance in the areas of disaster management, cyclone, and flood and crop management.

Born on October 17, 1952 at Aska locality in Ganjam district, Dr. Panigrahi completed her Masters in Botany from Berhampur University in 1974 and did her Ph.D from IIT, Kharagpur in 1982. She joined ISRO, Ahmedabad in 1983 as a scientist and retired from service as Principal Scientist in October 2012.

She was the sister-in-law of SOA University Vice-Chancellor Prof Ashok Mohapatra.
