Chandigarh: In a blood-curdling incident, a suspended policeman shot dead his son-in-law, a bureaucrat, inside a court complex here on Saturday afternoon.

Malwinder Singh Sidhu, the accused, is a suspended assistant inspector general of Punjab Police, while the victim, Harpreet Singh, was an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer in the Irrigation department.

The two, involved in a domestic family dispute, were at the Chandigarh Family court in connection with the case.

A mediation session between the two sides was underway when Malwinder excused himself to use the washroom. His son-in-law offered to show him the way, and both went out of the court room.

A few moments later, five shots were heard.

Malwinder hit Harpreet with two of the bullets he fired, and the latter collapsed to the ground.

Some of the lawyers present rushed to the spot of crime, cornered the accused and locked him in a room and informed police, who detained the accused.

Videos from inside the court complex showed Harpreet on the floor.

“He has been shot. Please someone take him to a hospital,” a man was heard saying.

Another video showed Harpreet lying in a pool of blood.

He died on the way to the hospital.
