Bhubaneswar: Sunit Das, suspended IIC of Sarankul police station In Nayagad district, appeared before the Odisha Crime Branch on Tuesday in connection with a sexual harassment case, following directions of the High Court.
According to information, Das appeared before the Crime Branch CAW (Crime Against Women) wing which is investigating the case following orders of the DGP.
The suspended police officer’s appearance before the investigating agency came in compliance with directions issued by the Orissa High Court, which instructed him to cooperate fully with the ongoing probe.
The case was registered after a married woman alleged that she was sexually assaulted by the police officer.
According to the complaint, the woman had approached Sarankul police seeking protection and justice after facing harassment and assault by some villagers. She alleged in a written complaint to the Nayagad SP that the IIC took advantage of her vulnerable situation by assuring her of assistance and legal support.
Following the allegations, Das was placed under suspension on charges of misconduct and dereliction of duty. On June 18, he was transferred to Nayagarh district police headquarters. During the suspension period, he was asked to remain under the disciplinary control of the IG (Central Range), Cuttack.
The Crime Branch is continuing its probe into the matter.
