Bhubaneswar: A day after a man allegedly assaulted his wife with a knife inside her office in Odisha capital, police on Tuesday attributed the brutal attack to simmering hostility between the couple, leading to suspicion and repressed anger.
Briefing the media, Bhubaneswar Zone 3 ACP Pradeep Rout said that the accused Sapan Kumar Kar (35) carried a knife with him when he went to meet his estranged wife Madhusmita Das (26) after she informed him about working with real estate firm at Bharatpur here. “After getting a call from him around 1.30 pm, she came down to meet him. After a heated exchange, he stabbed her five to six times in the abdomen, neck, hands and on the back, follow which she rushed back to her office. She was immediately rushed to a hospital and police were also able to nab Sapan with the help of the staff there,” he said.
The ACP further said that the couple tied the knot in 2018 and have a five-year-old son. However, Madhusmita had been staying at her father’s house with their son at Khaira, Balasore, since last two years due to personal differences and joined the firm as a sales executive about a week ago. And Sapan, who then left for Pune to work as a chef at a bar, was in Odisha to attend the final rites of his uncle.
“Sapan used to suspect Madhusmita and got miffed with her when she did not turn up for the tenth day rituals of his uncle,” he said elaborating on the immediate reason behind the attack.

He also informed that Madhusmita had earlier lodged a dowry complaint against Sapan with Soro police and the matter is sub-judice.
Notably, the CCTV footage of Sapan slapping Madhusmita and then attacking her with a knife has also gone viral.
