New Delhi: The Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry has inked an MoU with food delivery app Swiggy to get street food vendors on-board via its online food-delivery platform.

The move will help these vendors get more access to consumers during the pandemic.

The scheme will be launched as a pilot programme in Ahmedabad, Chennai, Delhi, Indore and Varanasi where 250 vendors will be signed up.

The street vendors will get assistance in getting PAN and FSSAI registration, app usage training, menu digitisation, pricing and best practices in hygiene and packaging , the ministry said.

The initiative is a part of Prime Minister Street Vendor’s Atmanirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) scheme, and if successful, will be rolled out to other parts of the country.

“During the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, where physical distancing is the key to check its spread, this novel initiative aims to radically transform the business of street vendors across cities, by facilitating them to receive orders and serve customers using online mode of business,” the statement added.

The PM SVANidhi scheme is aiming to provide affordable working capital loan to street vendors and could benefit over 50 lakh street vendors.
