Bhubaneswar: The dreaded swine flu claimed its first victim in the state this season on Saturday with a 53-year-old man succumbing to the avian influenza while undergoing treatment at a private hospital here.
Director of Health Services Kailash Chandra Dash confirmed it.
Meanwhile, six more persons have been infected by the H1N1 virus, taking the number of such patients to 24. Of the 16 blood samples tested on Friday, six – four from the state capital and one each from Cuttack and Sundargarh- were found to be positive, official sources said.
