Bhubaneswar: A probable low pressure system over Bay of Bengal may intensify into a depression and subsequently into a cyclone on the night of September 12 (Sunday) or forenoon of September 13 (Monday), a top weather expert warned on Thursday.
According to Sarat Chandra Sahu, Director of Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) under SOA Deemed to be University and former director of Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, the system is likely to move in a westerly direction initially and then in a north-westerly direction before crossing the coast between north Odisha and West Bengal on September 13.
If conditions remain favourable, the possibility of the system intensifying into a cyclone cannot be ruled out, Sahu added.
Also on Thursday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Odisha will receive heavy rainfall in the next 48 hours due to the low-pressure area that is set to form over Bay of Bengal.
The IMD said a monsoon trough running from northeast Arabian Sea to north Odisha will most likely create a low-pressure area over north and central Bay of Bengal around September 11 (Saturday). The system is most likely concentrate into a depression during the subsequent 48 hours.
Under its influence, there will be heavy rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in most parts of the coastal and interior districts of Odisha from September 11 and the inclement weather will continue till September 14, the IMD said.
Fishermen are advised not to venture into sea along and off the Odisha coast, North Bay of Bengal and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal for three days between September 12 and 14 as squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph and gusting 60 kmph will make the sea condition very rough.
