New Delhi: The COVId-19 pandemic has shifted the scales of the food industry. The share of takeaways, which once were a small part of branded food chains, has now increased to 10-30 per cent.
McDonald’s told The Times Of India that its takeaways have doubled in the pandemic. Chayos, a tea-chain, which barely had takeaways earlier, now sees 10 per cent of business coming from it. Its founder Nitin Saluja has remarked that people do not want to sit inside restaurants nowadays.
KFC has seen the business grow in deliveries and also has a service that delivers to your car or bike.
Delivery service Zomato on Wednesday said that its business is back to 85 per cent of the pre-COVID level. It noted that order sizes have increased by around 20 per cent, and it is the affluent neighbourhoods that are driving more sales. Premium restaurants and hotels have also joined the delivery route. Zomato is hoping to make up for lost market in the IPL season and even cross pre-COVID level sales.
Swiggy, on the other hand, is spreading its wings to grocery and other deliveries. Zomato, which had started grocery deliveries during the lockdown, has stopped the service completely.
